Background footage under the clip
Split-Screen Video Maker for Short Clips
To make a split-screen video from a long recording, use ClipClap as a split-screen video maker and pick a background when you submit it. ClipClap cuts the strongest moments and puts the speaker on top with looping footage underneath, the Subway Surfers-style layout. Paid plans choose from the licensed library or upload their own.

How do I make a split-screen clip?
Submit the long video and open the Background under the clip menu. AI finds the moments in the original recording, puts each speaker on top and loops the background footage underneath. Paid plans can pick any title from the licensed library or upload their own video.
- 01
Choose a background when you submit
Next to the clip language there is a Background under the clip menu. Pick None, a title from the library, or My background after you have uploaded one. The choice is remembered for your next video.
- 02
The moments are still chosen by AI
ClipClap finds the strong moments in the original recording first, then lays each one over the background. The speaker tile is the centre of the vertical frame, about 55% of its height, so a shot with a lot of headroom may lose the top of the frame.
- 03
A licensed library, or your own upload
The library is licensed footage, and every item is listed with its license and source on the credits page. On a paid plan you can also upload your own background video, up to 300 MB, and it is kept on your account until you remove it in Settings.
- 04
Subtitles sit just above the footage
Burned-in subtitles are placed at the bottom of the speaker's part of the frame, so they stay readable and do not cover the background.
When does a clip not get a background?
Clips that already use a stream layout with a webcam inset or a two-person split keep their own composition, and music shorts skip the background, so not every clip in a job gets one. A background shorter than ten seconds, or one that cannot be read, is skipped and the clip renders without it.

- A background you upload is your responsibility. Only use footage you own or have the right to use, and ClipClap removes uploads on request.

Which videos suit a split-screen layout?
Talking-head material: podcasts, interviews, commentary, lectures and explainers, where the picture of the speaker adds little and the second tile holds attention. Gameplay streams with a webcam keep their own layout, so they get no extra background. The layout needs a clear face in frame, because the speaker tile crops around it.
Where does the background footage come from?
From a library of licensed footage, plus any video you upload on a paid plan. Every library item is listed with its license and source on the credits page. The library does not contain recordings of popular mobile games. If you want a specific game, record it yourself and upload it as My background.
What are the rules for my own background video?
It can be up to 300 MB and at least ten seconds long, and it is looped under the clip. It stays on your account until you replace or remove it in Settings. You are responsible for the rights to it, and ClipClap deletes an upload on request. A file that cannot be read is skipped.
Does a background change the cost?
No. A background does not use extra source minutes. Choosing another title from the library and uploading your own are paid features, so the price is the plan itself: €3.99 ($4.49) a week for Starter, or €12 ($13.99) a month.
Does ClipClap use footage from popular mobile games?
No. The library contains only licensed footage, and the credits page lists the license and source of every item. If you want a particular game, upload your own recording of it on a paid plan and use it as My background, as long as you have the right to use that footage.
Can I change the background later?
Yes, choose another one on your next video; your own upload can be replaced or removed in Settings. The background is part of the render, so an existing clip keeps the one it was made with. To change it on a clip you already have, submit the source again.
Want to see your speaker over background footage?
Paid plans start at €3.99 ($4.49) a week, and the first week is €1.99 ($2.29) for new customers.
